This guide will step you through creating your own assessment quiz to add to your course.  To learn how to build a course click here.

NOTE:  To access the Quiz Builder module the user needs to have the group role of 'Course Builder'.

1. From the 'Manage' tab 

2. Select 'Quiz Builder'

3. Click Add quiz template

4. Name your quiz template

5. Give your quiz template a code then save.

6. Fill in the default message details
These are the details that will be the defaults for the questions that can be overridden at the question level

You can also enter html code into the boxes and reference the custom box inputs from other boxes

Please contact support to unlock your account and assist you with this question.
Question Correct Message:

Correct response.
Incorrect Message:

Incorrect response, please close this quiz and review the course material before re-attempting. Please note: if you answer incorrectly 4 times, your account will be suspended and you will need to contact support to assist you with this question.
Pending Message:

Thank you for your answer, our training team will assess it ASAP during business hours, Monday to Friday. If you have answered incorrectly you will be notified by email and instructed to return here to try again.
Retry Message:

Lockout Message:

Unfortunately, you have answered this question incorrectly too many times. Your account has been suspended and you must now contact support for assistance before continuing. Please note: this process is a requirement of the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for online training.

7. Create Questions

Only once you have completed adding the quiz template and default messages click 'Save'.  The next step is to add your questions.

Click the 'Create Question' link


8. Select Question Type

NOTE:  You only get to choose this once and if you choose the wrong type the only thing you can do is delete the question or make the question inactive so it doesn't show up in the final quiz.  

Question Types:

Choice = multiple choice type

Essay = typing in a response

Likert = is a radio button type of input

Message = Message only

Form = data input

This is the question you are asking the student.  Keep this as simple as possible.  Use capitals, spell check, and correct punctuation.  Make sure you specify the number of answers you are requesting and type the number in brackets eg Give three (3) reasons for …..
Question 3: Approximately how many venues are licensed to sell liquor in NSW?
Give the question a unique code (optional)
If you are going to use the custom fields or html then you need to wrap any text in <p> tags.  i.e. at the start <p> and at the end </p>
Using custom tags for websites Eg
If custom 1 = the name you want to give a hyperlink and custom 2 is the web address of the hyperlink;

Hint (displayed after the first incorrect attempt):
After an incorrect attempt, you can display a hint to the student when they return to re-attempt the question.
In this example the student is directed to the learning section headhing (custom 1) and can click the link (custom 2) to open that section of the learning material.

Order of the question if not random

Max Attempts:
The maximum number of attempts before being locked out of the question
Instant Retry:
Allows student to try again without returning to the course material

Allow Incorrect:
Do not tick this box if the student needs to get all questions correct.
Tick this to hide this question i.e. delete. If a course is live, tick this box before hitting save so that the live students don’t see it until you have all of the questions done and they have been double checked etc.

Essay details
This subheading is related to the question type you chose earlier

Text Mode:
Single line =  a single line of text entry
Multi-line =  multiple lines of text entry
Password = hidden character entry
Single line
Min Words:
The minimum word count that a student can enter otherwise they get a message

Min Words:
The number of whole words – eg if you are asking for three things the minimum words would be 3 – always be super conservative i.e. what is the absolute minimum number of words someone could answer the question

Max Words:
The maximum number of words allowed

Spell Check:
Ticking this means that the student will not be able to submit answers that are underlined in red.  You must add specific words to the system for the system to allow them.

Survey Mode:
?? indicates not to give responses ??

Draft Enabled
To allow students to save a draft of their response prior to submitting select this option
NOTE: if you are using multiple questions per page then every question on that page must be ticked enable draft or not otherwise it will cause errors.
This will provide 3 x buttons in the student’s view
1 - Save draft – to allow them to come back to edit their response prior to submit.
2 – Submit (for marking)
3 - Close
Automated Scoring Formula:
This is where keywords and characters can be highlighted and scored for computer-assisted marking.
Separate SOP provided
Hint (starting text):
This text will appear in the answer box at the start of the answer and be part of the answer.

Assessor's Notes (answer key):
The correct answer or comments about wrong answers for the assessor.  These notes can only be seen by the assessor marking the quiz responses.
More than 18,000 (18.000 is also acceptable)
Automated Scoring Formula:
This will allow you to set keywords and phrases that the system will recognise as being correct or incorrect and indicate this to the assessor marking the quiz.

Example Choice Type Question:

You can use this question type to create multiple choice or multi-choice questions.

Select 'Choice' from the 'Question Type' drop-down box when you click to add a new question.

Enter your question details as above then save the question template.

Only once you save can you then add the choice of answer options or items.

Randomize Items:
This will randomize the answer options each time it is presented – this feature makes it easier to reduce cheating or guessing

Allows the ability to require more than 1 correct answer

Survey Mode:
Records the answers without there being any correct or incorrect response.
